THE LEVEL AND THE SQUARE

We meet upon the Level and we part upon the Square.
What words of precious meaning, those words Masonic are!
Come, let us contemplate them! They are worthy of a thought;
In the very walls of Masonry the sentiment is wrought.

A Young Man and a Pawnbroker

A young man passed a pawnbroker’s shop. The money lender was standing in front of his shop, and the young man noted that he was wearing a large and beautiful Masonic emblem. After going on a whole block, apparently lost in thought, the young man turned back, stepped up to the pawnbroker, and addressed him: “I see you’re wearing a Masonic emblem. I’m a Freemason too. It happens that I’m desperately in need of $25 just now. I shall be able to repay it within ten days. You don’t know me; but I wonder whether the fact that you are a Freemason and that I am a Freemason is sufficient to induce you to lend me the money on my personal note.”

Three Great Reformists

Many say success comes in three while invariably too,  losses may also come in three. This was what happened in 1896, when in a year time Philippine Masonry lost its three favorite sons: the novelist, the journalist and the orator.

Freemasons in the Philippine Politics

by Bro Rodel J. Ramos
No fraternal organization has ever been persecuted, maligned, suspected, or blamed more for things that happened in the World than the Freemasonry. This secret society has developed a certain mysticism that intrigues many people because of their behind closed door meetings, secret handshake and passwords. Communists, dictators, religious fundamentalists and even the Catholic Church banned this fraternity centuries ago. Still others think they can manipulate governments just like what happened in Italy decades ago.

Philippine Independence Day 112th Anniversary

June 12, 1898, is a glorious date in the history of the Filipino people. On this day, Bro./President Emilio F. Aguinaldo proclaimed the freedom of the Filipino people. The Philippine national flag was hoisted and the country’s national anthem was played.

Bro. Aguinaldo’s proclamation of Philippine Independence not only heralded the birth of a new nation. It also brought glad tidings to the colonial subjects of Asia. It inspired the colonial subjects to struggle to be free, too.

Bro. Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro (November 30, 1863 – May 10, 1897) was a Filipino nationalist, revolutionary leader and a Freemason.

Bro. Andres was born to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro in Tondo, Manila and was the eldest of six children. His father was a tailor who served as a teniente mayor (municipal official) of Tondo while his mother (a mestiza of Spanish descent) worked in a cigarette factory. He was orphaned in his late teens - his mother died of tuberculosis in 1881 and his father followed a year after. Bro. Andres was forced to drop out of school and work to support his family. He worked as a mandatorio (clerk/messenger) for the English trading firm Fleming and Company, where he rose to become a corredor (agent) of tar and other goods. He later transferred to Fressell and Company, a German trading firm, where he worked as a bodeguero (warehouseman/agent). He also set up a family business of selling canes and paper fans. Bro. Andres was married twice. His first wife was a certain Monica who died of leprosy. His second wife was Gregoria de Jesús of Caloocan, whom he married in 1893. who would later be deeply involved in the activities of the Katipunan and would even-tually carve a name for herself in the annals of the Revolution.They had one son who died in infancy. Despite not finishing formal education, Bro. Andres was self-educated. He read books about the French Revolution, biographies of the Presidents of the United States, the colonial penal and civil codes, and novels such as Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, Eugène Sue's Le Juif errant and José Rizal's Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

I AM FREEMASONRY

I was born in antiquity, in the ancient days when men first dreamed of God. I have been tried through the ages, and found true. The crossroads of the world bear the imprint of my feet, and the cathedrals of all nations mark the skill of my hands. I strive for beauty and for symmetry. In my heart is wisdom and strength and courage for those who ask. Upon my altars is the Book of Holy Writ, and my prayers are to the One Omnipotent God.

Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol" And Freemasonry

  1. 1.What is "The Lost Symbol?"

The Lost Symbol is a novel written by Dan Brown and published by Doubleday. It is the sequel to his 2003 novel, The Da Vinci Code. The novel again features the fictional, mystery-solving Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon. It is set in Washington D.C., and the story takes place over a 12-hour period. The Langdon character also appeared in Brown’s 2000 novel, Angels & Demons

LAST NIGHT I KNELT WHERE HIRAM KNELT

Last night I knelt where Hiram knelt
And took an obligation.
Today I’m closer to my God
And I’m a Master Mason!
Tho’ heretofore my fellow men
Seemed each one like the other.
Today I search each one apart;
I’m looking for “My Brother”.
And, as I feel this friendly grip,
It fills my heart with pride;

Republic of the Phil.Stamps & Postal History

Philippine Masonic Philately
During the early stage of Masonic history, it was almost impossible for Filipinos to join any of the Spanish lodges in the Philippines.  The lodges that worked in the Philippines were all foreign founded and established for social purposes.
Marcelo H. Del Pilar and Dr. Jose P. Rizal conceived the idea of organizing Freemasonry in the Philippines.  As a result, Nilad Lodge No. 144 was established in 1891 with the consent of the Grand Oriente Espanol.  Marcelo H. Del Pilar, also known in the Philippines revolutionary world as “Plaridel” earned the recognition as Father of Philippine Masonry.
Following the Spanish-American war of 1898, Manila Lodge No. 342 was established in 1901 constituted by the Grand Lodge of California.  This was the first lodge in the Philippines with proper recognition by a regular Grand Lodge.
In a couple of years, two more lodges were formed, also under California, and these were Cavite Lodge No. 350 and Corregidor Lodge No. 386.  In 1912, these three lodges formed the Grand Lodge of the Philippines as we now know it, with 150 lodges

MY BROTHER THE PRESIDENT

My brother, Manuel Luis Quezon, was born on August 19, 1878 in the sleepy coastal town of Baler in what is now the province of Aurora. As a child, Kuya Manuel was called “Ang Kastila” because of his mestizo lineage. It is not clear if Kuya Manuel fought in the Philippine War for Independence but his father, a sergeant in the Spanish colonial government’s army, remained loyal to the Spanish flag which led to his and another son’s death in an ambush by Filipino Katipuneros while travelling to Baler from Nueva Ecija.

Take my hand; Follow Me

When I was a young man, a long time ago,
The secrets of Masonry I wanted to know.
Of a Mason I asked what those secrets might be.
He replied,"First, we talk, then we will see."

A petition he granted and ordered it filled
To be read at a meeting and a judgment be willed.
Then questions I answered about God and home;
Of habits and friends; a wife or alone.

BY THE WORK YOU DID TODAY

Can you say tonight in parting
with the day that's slipping past
That you helped a single brother
of the many that you passed?

Dr. Jose Rizal, an international Mason

One of the least known facets of the life of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, was his being a member of a worldwide fraternity called Freemasonry.

According to Filipino historian Reynold Fajardo, in his book “Dimasalang: The Masonic Life of Dr. Jose Rizal,” Rizal was not only a mason, he was the only one among the leaders of the revolutionary movement during the Spanish era who “deserved to be called an international Mason since he was a member of various Masonic lodges in Spain, Germany, France and possibly, England.”

The Philippine Flag - Its Masonic roots.

Time and again it has been asserted that masonry played an important role in the design of the Philippine flag and that some of its symbols were meant to memorialize the Craft. These assertions are essentially plausible, for the man principally responsible for its design — President Emilio Aguinaldo — was a zealous masonic partisan. In one of his speeches delivered after the Revolution, Aguinaldo said; "The successful Revolution of 1896 was masonically inspired, masonically led, and masonically executed. And I venture to say that the first Philippine Republic of which I was its humble president, was an achievement we owe, largely, to masonry and the freemasons."

Words to ponder by: On Freemasonry

Sharing some texts from excerpts of “MASONRY AND THE PHILLIPINE REVOLUTION” by MWBro Reynold S Fajardo and likewise a reminder of our continuing commitment as Masons to ……”BROTHERLY LOVE, RELIEF, TRUTH and LIBERTY, EQUALITY, FRATERNITY”.

A nice lesson of masonry worth sharing

Several years ago, the story is told of a Mason who always wore his Masonic ring and lapel pin when in public. On some occasions, he rode the bus from his home to the downtown area. On one such trip and when he sat down, he discovered the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change.

The Story Behind Forget Me Not Emblem!

In the years between World War 1 and World War 2 The blue Forget Me Not Emblem (Das Vergissmeinnicht) was a standard symbol used by most charitable organizations in Germany, with a very clear meaning: “Do not forget the poor and the destitute“. It was first introduced in German Masonry in 1926, well before the Nazi era, at the annual Communication of the Grand Lodge Zur Sonne, in Bremen, where it was distributed to all the participants. That was a terrible time in Germany, economically speaking, further aggravated in 1929 following that year’s Great Depression.

CBCP pastoral letter on freemasonry

OZAMIS CITY, September 29, 2008—Ozamiz Archbishop Jesus A. Dosado, CM echoed earlier pronouncements that Catholics in the freemasonry movement should be denied reception of Holy Communion and other sacraments.
In his pastoral letter on the subject of Freemasonry (accessible through http//www.cbcpworld.com/misamis/masonic4.htm), the prelate quoted the Epistle of Saint Paul (Eph 4:15) "Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ"
The prelate recalled during the 2001 July CBCP Plenary Assembly, it was decided that a catechesis of one year be made to the Catholic faithful on the negative judgment on Freemasonry, after which the CBCP guidelines of 1990 must be put into effect.

MW Peter Lim Lo Suy, Grand Master Of Masons In The Philippines

Freemasonry Today

Brief History of Freemasonry in the Philippines

In the Beginning… The history of Philippine Masonry may be likened to the history of the first Grand Lodge. On the Feast of St. John the Baptist in 1717, four of the pre-existing Masonic lodges in Great Britain organized what became the first Grand Lodge of the world. On December 19, 1912, three lodges that were chartered under the Constitution of the Grand Lodge of California finally succeeded in establishing the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippine Islands, the forerunner of what is now officially known as the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines. Masonry existed in England long before the creation of the first Grand Lodge, so was Philippine Masonry already alive even before the formation of the Grand Lodge of the Philippine Islands.
